"The most abstract and intentional city on earth" is how Fyodor Dostoyevsky described the masterpiece city, St Petersburg. Others describe St Petersburg as Peter the Great’s “Venice of the North.” Whatever it is, St Petersburg is certainly awe-inspiring. It merges east and west. With its vibrant and whimsical Baroque facades, the opulence of Tsarist Russia is clearly apparent. Yet, the city seems more European than Russian, while at the same time, it seems too Russian to be European.
