With so many different cultures and languages packed into such a small space, a trip across Europe can feel like a trip across several worlds. Sometimes, though, it can be tricky to work out the best type of transport to take for your trip around the continent and to be honest it changes depending on the start and finish point of each journey – you’d find it tricky and a little bit wet to cycle from London to Paris, while a flight between Florence and nearby Pisa makes no sense at all.
Of course, flying is one of the most convenient and also luxurious forms of travel around the continent. You’ll have quick travel and a comfortable seat so it’s no surprise that many choose to fly between European destinations.
The only downside of flying, however, compared to other means of transport is that you may end up missing out a lot of Europe. With countless cities on the continent you could hop from city to city all the way from London to Russia and would still never see everything. Part of the magic of travelling around Europe is the journey from one city to the next and taking a flight means you’ll perhaps miss out on some of the wonderful countryside that Europe prides itself on.
Perfect for long-distances, flying is still a good option to have, but you’ll see a lot more of the continent by bus, for example…
If you really want to see the countryside of Europe, then taking a bus is for you!
Not only are buses one of the cheapest forms of travelling Europe, but with a window seat you’ll get to see just what exactly lies between the cities that have been photographed to death.
If travelling alone, a bus journey can also be a great way to meet people. If on a seven-hour trip from Barcelona to Madrid, for example, then chances are you’ll speak to the person sitting next to you at least once.
Like with bus travel, you’ll get the chance to enjoy the views as you pass between cities. Unlike bus travel, however, travelling by train is a lot lot quicker! You can quickly move from city to city and will quickly find that just about every must-visit place in Europe is connected by the rails.
These great connections don’t come cheap, however, and this may explain why many travellers prefer to opt for the cheaper options out there.
Whether by motorbike or by pedalling your way, there will be a real sense of satisfaction if you manage to explore the highlights of Europe you most want to see by zooming between cities on two wheels.
If you ever watched The Motorcycle Diaries and thought it could be for you and a good friend, but that South America was just too far away, then why not take a similar trip but on the just as culturally exciting European continent?
We’ve all had dreams of taking a typical American-style road trip so why not take yours across Europe?
