Things to See and Do in New Orleans

Despite being devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, this wonderful city shows little sign to the visitor of the rebuilding that has been required by locals. If you are considering a trip to the USA then this post reveals a little of why New Orleans should be top of your list. Often labeled a city for adults, and known as the Big Easy, this melting pot of culture in the State of Louisiana is a wonderful place to kick back and enjoy life.

Experience live Jazz

The roots of jazz can be found in New Orleans and this heritage makes the city one of the best places on earth to experience live jazz. Whether it’s during JazzFest, a large free music festival held every spring or at one of the many great music venues around the city, catching a live jazz show is simply a must while staying in New Orleans.

Watch the 2013 Super Bowl

If you are lucky enough to be in New Orleans on Sunday February 3rd 2013, then you’ll witness the most exciting day in the city this year. The 2013 Super Bowl is being hosted in New Orleans and as such you can expect the Super Bowl party of all parties. Make sure you book accommodation well in advance and if you don’t know your NFL, then get clued up! If you are feeling particularly lucky then why not bet on super bowl while you are there?

Eat Southern Food

The main cuisine in New Orleans is Creole, which is food generally cooked with roux and peppers, onion and celery at its base. This trio of ingredients is also known in the area as the “trinity” and variations on traditional Creole cooking in the form of Italian and other European influences can be found with its roots in West-African cooking. Many other types of food can be found in New Orleans although health fanatics and vegetarians may struggle a little.

Cruise on the Mississippi

If you are short on time why not combine a steamboat cruise along the Mississippi River whilst experiencing a local Jazz band play on board. Short and long cruises are available and you can journey by both steamboat and river ferry. Specific cruises are available to help you take in the sights including a cruise that takes in the Audubon Zoo.

Ride in a Street Car

A famous characteristic of New Orleans is its streetcars. Both a convenient and fun way to get around the city, taking a trip across town in a streetcar is the perfect way to see the real side of life in this city.
