How to Give Your Image a Makeover

We all get bored with the way we look from time to time. Of course, it’s important to feel comfortable in your own skin, but sometimes we all need a little refresh. Whether you’re preparing for a special event or you want a change to ring in the new season, there’s plenty you can do to give your image a quick makeover and improve your look. Here are five tips to inspire you.

 1. Dye your hair

Sometimes, all it takes is a change in hair color to achieve an entirely new look. Choose autumnal highlights or an entirely new shade to transform your hair. If you’re craving a unique style but don’t want to use dye, you could part your hair a new way, get it cut into a different style or don some trendy new headwear.

2. Experiment with make-up

Bored of wearing the same cosmetics day after day? Experiment with your makeup to switch up your style. You could try contouring, buy a new eyeshadow palette, or experiment with colorful mascara. The great thing about makeup is that you can try as many different looks as you like without permanently altering your appearance.

3. Invest in skincare

If your skin could do with some love, why not head to your local skincare salon for a pampering? Facials and moisturizing treatments can do wonders for your complexion, while laser skincare treatments can help you correct imperfections and enhance your natural beauty. If you’ve considered getting your lips filled but don’t want invasive surgery, dermal lip fillers could be the solution you’ve been waiting for. The medical experts at Your Laser Skin Care perform safe lip filling procedures using Restylane Los Angeles to reshape the skin and give you a fuller pout.

4. Reshape your brows

Your eyebrows frame your entire face, so their shape can have a major impact on the way you look. If you can’t afford to have them threaded or waxed at a salon, you can easily shape your eyebrows at home. Remember not to overpluck and to focus on the hairs that stray away from your brows’ natural arch shape. If you want to give your eyebrows more definition, you can use a pencil to fill in the area or even get them tattooed at a professional salon.

5. Switch up your wardrobe

You don’t have to invest in an entirely new wardrobe to give your image a makeover. While you might decide to buy some fresh pieces for the new season, you can make the most of the clothes you already own by trying new combinations, customizing your existing garments and accessorizing with different jewelry and shoes.

It’s important to spend some time on yourself now and then to make sure you’re feeling good, both inside and out. Whether you’re bored with your locks, in need of some new outfits or you simply want to try a new skincare routine, there’s a lot you can do to start the new season feeling fresh.

Tips for Being a Bridesmaid at a Destination Wedding

If one of your best friends is getting married in a far off, exotic location, and has asked you to be a bridesmaid, you are probably incredibly excited! After all, one of the only things better than being a bridesmaid is getting a fantastic vacation into the bargain! Of course, one of your duties as a bridesmaid is to help the bride cope with the stresses of the wedding and lend a hand wherever you can, and there are just as many things you can do to be a great bridesmaid when the wedding is far from home as when it is nearby! Here are some tips for being a good bridesmaid at your friend’s destination wedding:

Look After the Dress!

One of the scariest things for many brides getting married at an unfamiliar location is that something will happen to their dress. They have gone to a lot of trouble to choose the perfect wedding dress and so the idea of it getting lost or damaged, or even just being too creased to look right for the big day can be a real source of sleepless nights for destination brides. A big way you can help, then, is to take looking after the dress off of the bride’s hands. This also means you can help her keep the dress a secret from the groom if she wants to – something many destination brides have to forgo out of necessity. You’ll be taking care of your own carefully chosen bridesmaid dress for the wedding anyway, so why not volunteer to handle the wedding gown too?

Keep the Other Guests Occupied

A bridesmaid has a key role in the wedding party, and so it is perfectly reasonable for you to take the lead in organizing things for everybody to do at the location or resort, such as where to eat and where to go for drinks the night before the wedding! You can also try and find activities to keep the other guests busy and help them get the most out of their trips – you have time to research this kind of thing and make arrangements, but the bride doesn’t, so it could be a great way to help her ensure her guests all have a lovely time without taking up her ‘bride time’.

Give Them Some Space After the Wedding

A destination wedding can mean a lot of great things but one aspect many couples who choose this kind of wedding say with hindsight was a negative is that they never get the same amount of alone time on their vacation as couples who have a traditional wedding and honeymoon do. Another way you can help them have the best wedding possible is to give them some space after the wedding to have some romantic time together, and to encourage other guests to do the same.

A bridesmaid can be just as big a help to a bride at a destination wedding as at any other, so make sure you look for ways you

What ball dress suits your body shape best?

Determining your body shape is central to dressing well and looking fabulous in everything you wear. Any ball gown is a statement piece. It shouts, ‘look at me in my finest’ the minute you step into it, so it is crucial to wear a gown that suits your shape and makes you feel amazing.

Although we are all different, there are five basic body shapes: apple, pear, hourglass, rectangle and wedge, or it may be that you are a combination of two of these. By understanding your own shape, you can dress to accentuate your best features and disguise those you are less happy with. With all body shapes, it is simply a case of evening out proportions to make the most of what you have.

Which Shape, Which Dress?

If you are lucky enough to have a rectangle body shape, it is likely that you are slim with well-proportioned shoulders and hips. As you have little in the way to hide, you need to look for a dress that will accentuate your waist and a scoop or sweetheart neckline to give the impression of curves. Make the most of your slender frame with short, sleeveless dresses to show off long legs and arms.

Whilst an hourglass figure is one of the most desirable, with equally proportioned bust and hips, those wonderful curves need to be carefully shown off. Highlight your waistline with sashes, beading accents, or ruche detail. A sweetheart neckline or V-neck will lengthen the appearance of your body and halter neck dresses will accentuate your shoulders.

The apple body shape needs a ball gown that is not too tight and takes attention away from the stomach area. Short and tight gowns do not compliment this figure and should be avoided. Longer dresses that have empire waists work well or dresses that have detailing on the bust or hip to draw attention to these areas rather than the waist.

Similarly for pear shaped bodies, it is all about drawing focus from one area of the body to another to even out broad hips and narrow shoulders.

Knowing Where to Emphasise

Strapless dresses and ruffles around the bust line are great ways of drawing attention upwards, as are square or boat neck necklines. Keep the bottom hem wide with A-line skirts or full length skirts that flare or pool around the ankles.

The opposite of the pear shape is the wedge shape, which is more of an inverted triangle with wide shoulders and narrow hips. In this instance, the focus needs to be drawn away from the shoulders, wearing styles that emphasise the hips and soften the neckline. Avoid boat necklines and spaghetti straps and opt for fuller skirts, asymmetrical necklines and fitted waists.

Lucy Knight has been writing fashion blogs for style websites and fashion houses for more than six years. In researching ball dresses, her conclusion is that there are plenty of ball dresses for all body shapes as long as you know what shape you are.

In the Buff – the Travel Accessory I Cannot Live Without

Up until about a year ago, I was the girl with the really long hair. I was also the girl with the really thick hair. My lion mane kind of identified me; it was a disproportionately big part of my identity (pun intended.) And while I could hide behind it when things got awkward or flaunt when I wanted to feel sexy, there was one time having giant hair was a consistent pain in the ass – on my travels.

Lion mane in full force - quite the head of hair.

Lion mane in full force – quite the head of hair.

Hiking in Panther Town, North Carolina, I was amazed by the density of the foliage and the density of the frizz ball atop my head. Summiting Wayna Picchu in Peru offered breathtaking views of Machu Picchu below and my tresses in the wind all over my face. As a lover of camping, hiking and climbing, I have left a trail of broken hair ties scattered across the globe. I love my hair – not despite its oddness but because of it – and I’d never complain. But I needed a better way to tame the mane.

Enter the travel buff. I didn’t really know what a buff was until my friend Sara lent me hers when we were camping in Canasí, Cuba. Sara’s hair makes my hair look feeble and limp; it’s the most beautiful golden head of hair I’ve ever seen. Seriously, the girl’s hair makes me want to break a few rules, and I’m pretty sure she’s got to go to Home Depot or something to find industrial-strength hair ties to manage it. To that end, she always travels with a buff.

I too now always travel with a buff.

I wish I could say I intentionally color coordinated the buff and fleece, but I'm not that good.

I wish I could say I intentionally color coordinated the buff and fleece, but I’m not that good.

The buff is a genius travel accessory in its simplicity – it’s pretty much just a ring of stretchable fabric. Or maybe it’s more of a tube, as mine is a bit over a foot long. Whatever it is, it acts as a versatile headband, allowing the wearer to bunch it up, stretch it out, or tie it tight around her hair. Check out this sweet diagram outlining some of the virtually infinite ways you can employ this bad boy on your adventures. (I swear, this isn’t a shameless plug for Buffs, I just seriously love them.)

How_2_Wear_a_Buff

My buff comes with me on any and every manner of travel adventure – from my more rugged outdoor excursions to lazy urban exploration. At this point, that buff of mine is racking up some serious mileage and crossing off countries visited left and right. It made having a ridiculous amount of hair an afterthought to my travels, which is a huge relief. And it made me feel like I was looking good doing it (as good as a girl can look makeup-less and sweaty hauling it up over a mountain, anyway.) That may sound silly, but it matters.

I mentioned that the buff tamed my plus-sized hair until about a year ago; that’s when I cut it all off and donated it to Locks of Love, another organization I’ll push just out of sheer love. They do great stuff, and it’s an awesome cause. But the buff still travels with me. I thought it’d be less useful without all the hair, but it’s still my number one travel accessory. And while I may never get used to short hair or feel like it’s very “me,” the buff makes me feel a bit more like myself.

Why Paris is More Than Just a Fancy Tower

Located on the river Seine, Paris is the most glamorous capital in Europe, hosting some of the world’s most sumptuous designers such as: Christian Dior, Guerlain, Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel and many more. Paris is not famous just for its magnificent fashion culture, but also for the amazing food, having the second highest number of Michelin-restaurants in the world. Known to be the most romantic city in Europe, Paris is also overflowing with its fabulous artistic and cultural landmarks.

I believe that we all agree that the Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular attractions when it comes to Paris. Being almost a cliché among the travellers all over the world, going to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower is like not going to Paris at all. The best part about this is that even if you don’t want to see it, you will most probably do, as the Tower is 300 metres tall.

With its gigantic red windmill sitting on top of its structure, Moulin Rouge, once the most disputed and controversial venues in Paris, is now a significant landmark for tourists all over Europe. Moulin Rouge, formerly known as a brothel is now a cabaret, home to talented dancers who have over 100 performances every night in this vibrant place. Visitors are more than welcome to enjoy the glamorous atmosphere and the gorgeous dances performed by the ladies.

Napoleon’s Triumphal Arch, Arc de Triomphe is located in the heart of Place Charles de Gaulle, exactly at the end of the Champs Elysees. The Arch is a symbol for Napoleon’s victorious battles and it is considered one of the most emblematic monuments in Paris. For those who are willing to climb 234 steps to the observation deck, at the top, there is an amazing view that can’t be missed by anyone who visits this gorgeous city.

Situate in the city centre, the Louvre Museum is the most important museum in Paris and definitely one of the greatest museums in the world. The museum houses 1 million works of art, among which the notorious Mona Lisa. Louvre has three wings: Sully, Richelieu and Denon, where visitors can see on display a breathtaking range of art works varying from Greek Collections to tapestries, furniture and even Napoleon’s luxurious apartments abundantly decorated.

The Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most important historical monuments in Paris. With its magnificent Gallery of Kings, the majestic Cathedral is visited by millions of people every year and it is a national symbol and pride.

Even though these are the most important landmarks in Paris, one cannot leave this stunning city without having a walk on the glamorous Champs Elysees Avenue,   a visit to the sublime Versailles Palace, the imposing Sacré-Coeur basilica, the beautiful Jardin du Luxembourg, which is one of the most famous parks in Paris, with its extremely picturesque landscapes and incredibly wonderful fountains.

Also, keep in mind that Paris is a highly cultural city with a lot of fascinating events, festivals and performances, so make sure you check the cultural schedule as soon as you get there!
