Some Tips For Travelling in Oman

If you are a lone lady traveller to the Sultanate of Oman, then you will have a fantastic time. You must, however, bear the tips in this article in mind. First up, Oman is a very conservative country. The Omani people are very peaceful and also follow the Muslim religion. The law within the country is very strict and does not permit certain things. You need to make sure to follow them carefully to avoid any mishap or to make sure you do not end up in a legal battle!

First of all, as a lady touching down in Oman, you should make a note of the fact that you should cover your arms and legs. Many travellers fly out to Oman thinking that they will be fine with shorts and t shirt. They then find that they are bombarded by looks from ladies who are not happy about the way they are dressed up, and of course, men who are not used to seeing women with such short attire!

There is no law set in place in Oman to cover up, but you should always take into consideration the local custom and when possible try to fit in, especially as a lady abroad. Yes, you can wear your swimming gear in the hotel you are staying at, however if you do wind up at a local beach and decide to strip down to your bikini you will find yourself facing a problem. For a start, there are a lot of labourers and workers on the beaches, and you will find it very awkward to get out of the water after your swim as there will usually be a crowd of onlookers! It sounds humorous to read; however, when you are faced with the reality of the issue, it is not so funny! Imagine trying to cover up your bits with a crowd of local labourers, and you will quite literally feel like staying in the sea until you have dissolved!

Smoking in the street a woman.Again, this is something that is not common in Oman. Ladies who smoke are considered attention seeking and lower class. That’s not to say that Omani women do not smoke, but they just cover it up more.

Walking in the street as a woman, you should stick to the designated areas in Oman. It is very common to experience horn beeps, silly comments and ‘stares if you are a lady attempting to walk anywhere on your own! Women tend to stick to the car, and the country is very laid back. Without a car, it is almost impossible to move in Oman. The heat is so warm and intense. There are taxis in Oman, but you should not try to flag down the street cabs. It is better to call one of the local cab companies from your hotel. There are not really any buses in Oman, just taxi buses that are packed full of commuters who split the fare.

Oman is a country that has a very low crime rate, and as long as you stick to your good common sense you will have a fantastic time.
