Nice, on France’s Cote d’Azur, is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway for two. There are lots of attractions here that will appeal to couples, not to mention the stunning weather and beautiful beaches.
To get you in the mood for a loved-up holiday in Nice, we’ve put together a list of some of the top reasons to travel to the French city for a break with your partner.
If there’s one thing you shouldn’t go without on a romantic trip away it’s a delicious dinner for two in stunning surroundings. Nice certainly delivers on this front, with a host of beachside restaurants where you’ll have amazing sea views as you dine. Of course, you’ll want that stunning location to be matched by tasty cuisine, which is why it’s worth booking a table at one of the city’s gourmet restaurants.
One of the top options is Le Chantecler Restaurant at the Negresco Hotel, which is located on the Promenade des Anglais with views across the bay. Chef Jean-Denis Rieubland has two Michelin stars to his name, which means you can expect to have an outstanding meal here.
As Nice is on the Cote d’Azur, you can look forward to sunning yourselves on gorgeous sandy beaches during a trip to the city. There are 20 public beaches and 15 private ones, with the latter providing sunloungers, parasols, showers and changing rooms for guests to use, although only between April and October. These stretches of sand also have their own restaurants where you can grab refreshments during the day.
As Nice is situated in the heart of the French Riviera, it would be a shame not to explore some of the other sections of coastline that make up this region. There are some delightful villages located in the hills behind the city, as well as plenty of exciting country roads that will lead you to secluded coves and small seaside towns.
The best way to discover the area around Nice is by hiring a car, with firms like Auto Europe offering some great deals on car rentals. This will give you all the freedom you could want over where to go and how long to stay out for during the day; you never know what hidden gem you and your partner will stumble across!
Fascinating culture and history
Nice is home to a wide selection of museums, art galleries and historical monuments, giving you plenty of things to enjoy as a couple if you’re keen to inject a bit of culture into your holiday.
The Cathedrale Sainte-Reparate is particularly striking, with its interior pillars and ceilings decorated with ornate carvings and paintings. It was built in the 16th century and is the largest place of worship in Old Nice. Its design was inspired by early Baroque churches in Rome and you’ll notice echoes of St Peter’s Basilica in the interior decoration.
Another must-visit site for opulent architecture and design is the Palais Lascaris, which was once the home of the Lascaris-Ventimiglia family. Intricate statues and carvings adorn the walls and hallways, along with stunning murals throughout the building. It was originally constructed in the 17th century and fully restored to its current state in 1963.
To step back even further in time, pay a visit to Colline du Chateau – or Castle Hill – which is where the Phoenician Greeks set up their first trading post in the area. Although little of this medieval settlement remains today, what’s left of the ruins is located in a beautiful botanical garden and park that provides the perfect backdrop for a romantic stroll.
