Whether you are jetting off abroad or staying closer to home this summer, a day or two on the beach can work wonders for your mind and body. All that sunshine and vitamin D, the feel of the sand between your toes, the cool of the open sea, and, of course, the ice cream, are real pleasures that everyone should indulge in as often as possible.
But for some women a trip to the beach can be something of a stressful situation – how on earth do you manage to look great, stay cool and be safe all at the same time? Read on for the ultimate guide to what to wear on the beach this summer.
Rule number one is: ALWAYS wear sun cream. This is not negotiable. Sun safety starts before you head out the door and continues throughout the day and into the evening. Take it seriously and your skin will thank you in years to come.
The key item you need for the beach is your swimming outfit. Even if you don’t plan on venturing in to the sea you will be spending a lot of time in that cossie or bikini. Ruffles and halternecks are the big trend this season, as are bright and bold tropical prints.
That said, you do not want to bear all that flesh the whole time, so something that is easy to throw on over your swimsuit is a must. A floaty maxi dress will take you through to early evening drinks, or a patterned sarong or big scarf can give an exotic look.
A hat and sunglasses are another two must-have pieces to help you look good and protect your body from the sun’s rays. Oversized shades are glamorous and functional, and a wide-brimmed beach hat can be fun and sexy. If you can’t find a hat that suits then use a fabric hairband to keep hair out of your eyes. Add a big fake flower for a taste of the exotic.
Jewellery should be kept to a minimum at the beach, but if you must wear something stick to one key piece that adds drama and glamour. Oversize hoop earrings or a feature pendant will do the trick. Switch up your jewellery daily, particularly if you always wear a watch or bracelet, to avoid odd tan lines.
Finally, your feet also need to look great so invest in a key pair of summer sandals from Debenhams. Jewelled thong sandals are really chic, and citrus colours are the ideal choice for a sizzling summer.
