French Fashion: Une Fille à Montmartre
Mon 22 Jul 2013
Having a place to stay near Montmartre on my recent trip to Paris proved to be quite beneficial in terms of discovering the bohemian side of the city. It was a welcoming contrast considering I was traveling on a five-day tripist-packed itinerary. Remnants of the area’s artistic legacy that still lives throughout the ruelles and establishments quickly became apparent as I uncovered its magic. Not only did its whimsical charm instantly win me over with French fashion in stores and boutiques, authentic crêperies that visitors dream of and lovely terraces filled with locals going about their day, but doing so while walking past the Sacré-Coeur basilica every morning made it all the more memorable.

Save for its pastel blue storefront, the nearly inconspicuous friperie Une Fille à Montmartre is the shopping destination for any girl wishing to update her current wardrobe with pieces that evoke a certain sense of je ne sais quoi. Vintage shopping at its best, this tiny consignment shop nestled in the heart of the 18th Arrondissement carries fabulous French fashion, whether that be haute labels or one-of-a-kind designer baubles.

Open for less than three years, the fairly new boutique spotlights the old. Much like shopping in your best girlfriend’s closet—or in one that every woman dreams of having—racks are adorned with pretty dresses; chic scarves and statement jewelry are delicately displayed all around; and coveted shoes are lined up at your disposal. Genuine Louboutins? They’ve been spotted here before—and you may come across a pair if you’re lucky. Therefore, this isn’t your typical thrift store, and as a result, items may seem a little pricier than your average secondhand shop. Rest assured: you do get a bang for your buck, as these finds are often barely worn and typically sold in mint condition.

Une Fille à Montmartre will also sell the up-and-coming clothing and accessory collections of emerging fashion designers. In addition to helping foster local talent, if you happen to be the owner of a time capsule of vintage designer stock and think it needs a new home, the boutique accepts donations.

As Coco Chanel once said: “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” So if you find yourself strolling through Montmartre one afternoon, be sure to stop by to discover what this charming locale has in store for you. Keep an eye out for fabulous fashion finds that have resurfaced this season from iconic labels like Dior and YSL, or snag that classic item from your favorite fashion magazine, and you, too, will soon begin to feel like une fille à Montmartre.
