Seen on the Streets of Paris: Party Shoes
Fri 28 Dec 2012
Most of us know that when it comes to partying into the New Year, shoes are going to make or break an outfit but also determine how long we stay standing. I went around Paris picking out some of the most gorgeous shoes that are actually being worn every day, from flat to high, bright to classic. No need to compromise—thanks to Paris street fashion, here I found beauty and comfort all in one.
Nude pumps became the new black shoe a few years ago. Leg-lengthening and classy, these go with many an outfit. I spotted some near Opéra Garnier, and they had been walked in all day. Next, my absolute favorite: black crocodile with a white platform on the ball of the foot. The shape of the pumps and the combination of neutrals and textures make this pair a winner. And to think when I asked to photograph these beauties, the girl who was wearing them said, “Oh, let me go and put some other ones on!” Needless to say, I discouraged her.
There was a lot of vintage footwear out and about, and Paris has wonderful affordable vintage shops in the Marais. Last time I was there, I found a shop selling cowboy boots for 5 euros. There are some beautiful vintage flats around.
Chunky heels and platforms are always a comfort and style winner. The turquoise pair worn with a mint green pedicure was wonderful. I can imagine that this pairing of bright leather shoes and a similarly toned pastel pedicure would work in a variety of ways. And punky studded-leather platforms channel a popular trend while still being comfortable. Worried they won’t look elegant enough? Team them with a floaty, pastel pink skirt to balance the look.
So if Parisian women can walk all day in these beautiful shoes, comfort need not mean dowdy—or, at least, bearable need not mean dowdy when it comes to choosing the shoes to slip into on New Year’s Eve… Good luck and happy dancing!
